Code for Africa (CfA), through its African Fact-Checking Alliance (AFCA), in partnership with Meta (which operates Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp) has launched the African Fact-Checking Incubator. This year-long initiative will support the growth of local media to debunk mis — and disinformation in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Niger.

The initiative offers training, mentorship and other support in three distinct tracks: journalists, editors and newsroom managers. Under the initiative, all three tracks will undergo intensive training in the basics of mis/disinformation and fact checking before being separated out into career specific training modules and mentorship. Participants who excelled in the earlier portions of the programme will be invited to apply to the final phase where they will be assisted to ‘co-create’ a fact-checking project/product and they will be eligible for $15,000 seed grants to assist with project launch.

In addition, core activities of the initiative also include public webinars that will target a larger number of participants.

The programme is expected to run until September 2023.
